Looking into the Frame
by Charlie Dixon

Exhibition: April 9 – April 28, 2017
Opening reception: April 9 from 2-4pm
Artist in attendance

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden proudly presents the photographic works of aspiring young artist Charlie Dixon. As a community organization, the Garden dedicates the month of April to support young talent and future leaders in arts and culture.

From a very young age, Charlie showed interest in visual arts, consistently being attracted to small details and elements of everyday spaces around him. As he grew older, Charlie became fascinated with social media platforms, which fuelled his creative desire to highlight the beauty of natural and urban landscapes. Using a small Pentax SLR borrowed from his mother, Charlie began to frame the world around him through the lens of his beloved camera.

More recently, Charlie has been exploring photography that calls into question the role of form and function in everyday life. Framing ordinary objects from unusual angles and vantage points, he reveals the surprising small details of familiar structures, forcing us to rethink. Aside from concepts of form, Charlie also explores the transformative effects of humans in different environments.

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden has always been a source of inspiration for Charlie. Strolling through the corridors, as the breathtaking landscapes transform into paintings fixated in the frames of beautifully designed leak windows – a view within a view. Charlie’s current photographic projects focus on framed views and city architecture. He will continue exploring the concepts of Macro and Micro Cosmos by making small details become the whole.
